Catechetics

The Ministry of Catechetics/Religious Education at Diocesan and Parish levels is part of the wider, whole Church ministry which fulfils both the Christian call in Baptism to hand on the Good News of the Gospel and an aspect of Mercy Vocation to instruct others unto justice in a compassionate and inclusive way.

Its Mission involves inspiring, resourcing and supporting students, teachers, parents/guardians, priests and chaplains in their great work of Partnership between Home, School and Parish to hand on and celebrate the Christian Story in the Catholic Tradition. Encouraging and supporting this Partnership entails working towards and supporting participative learning and leadership among parents/guardians in their own vocation of accompanying each child on that child's Faith Journey.

In today's Ireland the ministry of Catechetics brings catechists into contact with children and adults of different cultures, faiths, religious traditions and none. In all circumstances it calls us to a renewal in word and action of a sense of inclusiveness and respect for difference as also an openness to being enriched by others while conscious of living and working in accordance with our own Mission Statement and Ethos in The Catholic School.

The privilege of visiting schools, especially at Primary level, involves being influenced by the energy and joy of young children and their teachers as they participate in songs and stories, rituals and celebrations of our Christian Heritage as also sharing with them in their times of loss and bereavement.

Meetings with parents/guardians, priests, chaplains and Bishop support and inform us re faith differences and difficulties in today's differing social and multi-cultural situations. Meetings with peers at National level and with the connected organisations (e.g. Catholic Primary School Management Association (CPSMA)) also helps to renew, resource, energise and support us in answering the Christian and Mercy Call of Love and Justice for all.
