Justice - Awareness Raising/Education

As Mercy Sisters we in the west, like our Sisters nationally and worldwide commit ourselves to listen anew to the Gospel and to the reality of our world situation.
We endeavour to work towards ensuring that Mercy and Justice meet, so that living a just and merciful way of life we are seen as modelling who the Gospel is calling us to be for one another and for those in our outreach of Mercy.

We are conscious of committing ourselves in Justice and Mercy to right relationships, positive attitudes and to being attentive to interconnecting and networking.
The needs of poor people inform, challenge and invite us to a response in the way we live, discern and decide.
In turn our lives and actions hopefully make a difference to people on the margins of society enabling them to reclaim their dignity.
Being aware that much injustice is systemic we challenge systems that hold people enslaved and work towards replacing them with liberating ones.

We realise our commitment in practical ways by addressing themes such as:
Racism and Discrimination, Economic Justice through the promotion of Fairtrade and lobbying governments for just and fair treatment for the voiceless, Violence against women and the use of women for the Traffiking Industry, Partnership with and Care of the Earth.
We consistently focus on the Gospel, on our Congregational and Provincial Chapter Statements and on listening to God’s Spirit active and present especially in the cry of the poor and marginalised.
“What a consolation to serve Jesus Christ Himself in the person of the poor, and to walk the very same path He trod!” (Catherine McAuley)
