Mercy Associates

Who are Mercy Associates?

They are Christians who agree to live and promote the Mercy Charism in accordance with the particular form of life they have chosen. Associates can take the Mercy spirit and values to people and places the Sisters may not reach Associates extend the Charism of Mercy through prayer and works of mercy.

1. They pray regularly,
2. Attend monthly meetings,
3. Are active in the churc,
4. Live out the Mercy and Justice of God in their daily lives.

Following on the initial research on the Mercy Associates done by Angela Hartigan and Stella McCormack, before the Chapter in 2001, each community was asked to look at the possibility of having Associates in their area. Mutomo, Miguta, Nairobi and Ngarariga felt that they were now ready to take the next step. In October of 2002 we held meetings in these centres to explain to the people the meaning of Associates and the programme they would be following over the next year. At the end of the year people would then decide on making a commitment for one year. Like Catherine we decided to begin “by taking small steps not big strides.”
Anne Reid, an Associate from Ireland, met all the interested people from the different regions in Makadara Anne spoke of her own call to Mercy Associates and the effect it had on her life. She also spoke on the life of Catherine, her spirituality and her sayings. Anne fired them with enthusiasm and they went back home singing “she is here, she is here she is moving among us.”
